Syria: From Worse to Worst

May 11, 2013

The situation in Syria, or rather the horrific Syrian civil war, has gone from worse to worst as the death toll rises to a shocking 70,000. The tyrannical dictator, Bashar Assad continues to hold out against the rebels in a brutal stalemate that has reached the capital, Damascus, which was rocked by more bombings this week. The country’s financial capital, Aleppo, has been reduced to burning hell, and 2 million Syrians have already fled the country. All hopes of the war staying within Syria’s borders evaporated last week with the Israeli air strike on a Syrian military base and the entry of Assad supporting Lebanese militia (Hezbollah) into Syria, as it looks like becoming more of a Middle East regional conflict.

Also, with Shia dominated Iran supporting Assad and other Sunni nations backing the rebels, it threatens to become a sectarian Sunni-Shia conflict. The US continues to procrastinate the supply of arms to the rebels, fearing they will reach Islamist terrorist factions within the rebels, while other Western countries express concern over latest reports of the usage of nerve gas by Assad’s forces. With atrocities being committed by both Assad & the rebels, and Syrian refugees fighting to be accepted in their new homes, it seems there is no light at the end of this tunnel.
